Legally blind man teaches alleged intruder a lesson
(04-24) 14:54 PDT INDIANAPOLIS, (AP) --
A legally blind man beat up an intruder and held him at knifepoint until police arrived at the man's eastside home, authorities said. Allan Kieta, 49, told police he was at home Monday morning when his small dog began barking and he encountered the man.
"I opened the door and just ran into him. I had him pinned in the laundry room and just kept pummeling," said Kieta, a former wrestler in high school.
He said he grabbed the intruder by the belt and dragged him into the kitchen, where he put a knife at the man's throat and tried to dial 911.
"Being visually impaired, I couldn't get the buttons because I was using my left hand," he said. "It took me about 20 tries."
Police arrived within minutes and arrested Alvaro Castro, 25, on an initial charge of residential entry, Sgt. Matthew Mount said.
Lt. Jeff Duhamell was impressed with Kieta's feat.
"Its pretty remarkable for anyone thats blind to be able to defend themselves, let alone make an apprehension," Duhamell said. "To be able to grab this guy and hold him down until police got there is pretty remarkable."
Castro, who was initially taken to the Wishard Memorial Hospital detention facility, denied trying to burglarize the home and said he was a former boyfriend of Kieta's daughter and was trying to visit her, said Mount.
Kieta said Castro told him he was looking for his cat.
"I go, 'Your cat? You're in my house!'" Kieta recalled.
Castro was transferred to the Marion County Jail on Monday night.
Kieta said he suffered swollen hands and a sore back, but no serious injuries.
"When my wife was cleaning the blood off, she said, 'I think it's all his,'" Kieta said.

Carjacker stops to ask TV news crew for directions

A carjacking suspect stopped during the crime to ask a television news crew for directions, police said.
The 19-year-old was arraigned Thursday on a charge of aggravated robbery and ordered held on $50,000 bond.
WOIO-TV newswoman Shannon O'Brien and photographer Eric Walls were doing a sidewalk report Monday on bank problems when the passenger in a car asked for directions to a bank. The driver signaled that he was being held at gunpoint, O'Brien told police.
The news crew called police and followed the car until officers caught up. Police Lt. Thomas Stacho said the suspect was carrying a loaded handgun.

300-pound inmate complains Ark. jail doesn't feed him well

An inmate awaiting trial on a murder charge is suing the county, complaining he has lost more than 100 pounds because of the jailhouse menu.
Broderick Lloyd Laswell says he isn't happy that he's down to 308 pounds after eight months in the Benton County jail. He has filed a federal lawsuit complaining the jail doesn't provide inmates with enough food.
According to the suit, Laswell weighed 413 pounds when he was jailed in September. Police say he and a co-defendant fatally beat and stabbed a man, then set his home on fire.
"On several occasions I have started to do some exercising and my vision went blurry and I felt like I was going to pass out," Laswell wrote in his complaint. "About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again."
But Laswell then goes on to complain that he undertakes little vigorous activity.
"If we are in a small pod all day (and) do next to nothing for physical exercise, we should not lose weight," the suit says. "The only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally being starved to death."
The suit also asks that the county be ordered to serve hot meals. The jail has served only cold food for years.
The meals, provided through Aramark Correctional Institution Services, average 3,000 calories a day, jail Capt. Hunter Petray told The Morning News of northwest Arkansas for a story Saturday.
A typical Western diet consists of 2,000 to 3,000 calories a day.
Laswell's suit was filed without a lawyer in U.S. District Court in Fayetteville.

Supreme Court Says Police May Search even if arrest Invalid
WASHINGTON(AP) The Supreme Court affirmed Wednesday that police have the power to conduct searches and seize evidence, even when done during an arrest that turns out to have violated state law.
The unanimous decision comes in a case from Portsmouth, Va., where city detectives seized crack cocaine from a motorist after arresting him for a traffic ticket offense.
David Lee Moore was pulled over for driving on a suspended license. The violation is a minor crime in Virginia and calls for police to issue a court summons and let the driver go.
Instead, city detectives arrested Moore and prosecutors say that drugs taken from him in a subsequent search can be used against him as evidence.
"We reaffirm against a novel challenge what we have signaled for half a century," Justice Antonin Scalia wrote.
Scalia said that when officers have probable cause to believe a person has committed a crime in their presence, the Fourth Amendment permits them to make an arrest and to search the suspect in order to safeguard evidence and ensure their own safety.
Moore was convicted on a drug charge and sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison.
The Virginia Supreme Court ruled that police should have released Moore and could not lawfully conduct a search.
State law, said the Virginia Supreme Court, restricted officers to issuing a ticket in exchange for a promise to appear later in court. Virginia courts dismissed the indictment against Moore.
Moore argued that the Fourth Amendment permits a search only following a lawful state arrest.

His wife was really angry.

The next morning, Rick got up early and left for work.
When his wife woke up she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, and brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.

He Gave His Life For The Rescue
He wasn't supposed to be there.
Jason Cunningham, a pararescue man, was trained to go into the hairiest situations to bring wounded out.
But the Army Rangers — with whom Senior Airman Cunningham was working — didn't think they would need him.
The Rangers didn't know what the mission would be that March night in Afghanistan in 2002 — only that some special forces were in trouble and they had to bail them out.
With limited space aboard the helicopter, the Rangers wanted to bring more of their own shooters.
Cunningham and two other Air Force special operations guys said nuts — and sneaked aboard the Chinook at Bagram Air Base.
Once aloft, it was too late to leave them behind.
"You train for years. So the last thing you want to do is play chess in the barracks," said Malcolm MacPherson, an ex-Marine and journalist, who in his book "Roberts Ridge" documented the intense battle to follow.
Tragic miscues and faulty communication systems would send that Air Force and Ranger team straight into an al-Qaida and Taliban ambush. In some of the fiercest fighting of that war, Cunningham proved his worth, braving intense fire to make sure 10 wounded Americans made it home alive.
He gave his own life in the process on that 10,240-foot-high mountain known as Takur Ghar — and would land the Air Force Cross, the highest award for an airman short of the Medal of Honor.
Cunningham, born March 27, 1975, grew up in Carlsbad, N.M. He joined the Navy after high school. While stationed in Italy, he met a Navy-enlisted woman, Theresa de Castro, who became his wife and mother of his two daughters.
After a year out of the service, he joined the Air Force in 1999 and completed pararescue jumper training in 2001.
By 2002, he was in Afghanistan in the wake of 9/11. And in the early morning hours of March 4, Cunningham and the Rangers were going in to rescue a member of the SEALs, the Navy's elite combat team.
Operation Anaconda was the largest battle of the war to date. Al-Qaida and Taliban forces were massing in the remote Shah-i-Kot valley. U.S. and Afghan forces planned to clear them out.
The Chinook flying the SEAL team to the Takur Ghar peak the night of March 3 found an enemy bunker instead of an expected deserted patch of snow and rock. Machine-gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades crippled the helicopter. As it veered away, Petty Officer 1st Class Neil Roberts fell out the back.
The SEALs went back for their comrade, but met fierce resistance. They took more casualties and had to retreat down the mountain.
The confusion of battle and radio failures meant that Cunningham and the Rangers called in to help knew almost none of this. They expected to land nearby, pick up the SEALs and go home.
Instead, they were given the coordinates for the peak — the deadly kill zone. The sun was coming up. And the enemy was waiting.
As their Chinook — code named Razor 1 — came in to land, RPG and machine-gun fire slammed into the chopper and knocked out the right engine. It fell 10 feet to the ground. Both pilots were wounded by small-arms fire. One of the helicopter's side gunners was killed.
The Rangers, knocked to the ground by the crash, staggered out the back ramp. Enemy fire killed two fast. The survivors began a desperate attack uphill against the entrenched enemy only 60 feet away.
Cunningham and an Army medic immediately treated the wounded.
The downed Chinook soon caught fire. Soldiers later said the chopper was a bullet sponge, soaking up enemy rounds.
A second Ranger team managed to reach the first. With combined forces — and bombs and machine-gun fire from Air Force jets — the Rangers knocked out the bunker.
Cunningham and fellow medics moved the wounded from the burning Chinook to a seeming safe zone.
But the enemy counterattacked. The new casualty collection point outside the helicopter suddenly came under enemy fire.
Cunningham and Army medic Cory Lamereaux couldn't move the wounded by themselves. So they picked up rifles and fought back. For 40 minutes, they kept up the fire before both were hit.
Two bullets hit Lamereaux in the gut, just below his body armor. It was painful, but he would live.
Cunningham was hit once in the small of his back.
He shouted to Lamereaux, "I think I'm OK," according to MacPherson's account of the battle.
He wasn't.
The bullet tore through his liver. He was bleeding internally.
Sporadic fighting would continue throughout the day on Takur Ghar — the peak dubbed Roberts Ridge, after the lost SEAL.
Cunningham's condition sank. The Rangers called for an evacuation helicopter. But the enemy had knocked several helicopters out of the sky. The Americans couldn't risk another chopper and crew until nightfall, five hours away.
It was too late. Cunningham slipped away around 6 that night, 90 minutes before helicopters came.
They brought 10 wounded men off the mountain. Rangers also carried home the bodies of Cunningham and six others, including Roberts, the SEAL they went to rescue.
Operation Anaconda continued for 19 more days in and above the Shah-i-Kot Valley. The Army says hundreds of al-Qaida and Taliban forces were killed. Eight U.S. troops were killed, including the seven at Takur Ghar.
Cunningham was buried at Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery just days after the battle. Since 2004, the compound that houses Air Force personnel at Bagram Air Base has been called Camp Cunningham.
Jared Marquis lauds his brother-in-law, saying Cunningham's heroics inspired him to join the service.
"We don't forget in the Air Force the people who came before us," said Marquis, "and paid the ultimate sacrifice."

Iowa pranksters get just desserts: 3,000 forks in their yard

When known pranksters Rick and Marilyn Jones left town for a wedding, neighbors seeking payback eyed their property and decided to stick a fork in it — a few thousand forks, in fact.
Tom and Paula Tschudi planted 3,000 white plastic forks in the Jones' yard and dangled more from the roof, fence and garage.
"We just wanted to do something funny to them, because every time we leave, they pull some prank on us," said Paula Tschudi, who promised to help pick up the forks.
Over the years, the Joneses have strung beer cans like holiday lights around the Tschudis' home, put a for-sale sign in their yard and strung yellow crime-scene tape around chalk outlines of bodies on the sidewalk.
As the Tschudis, their two children and another neighborhood family planted the forks Sunday, one passer-by asked what they were doing.
"We told him we were aerating their lawn," Paula Tschudi said with a laugh.
Judge sentences lawyer to 90 days for lewd gesture

A flick of the wrist has landed an Austin lawyer in jail for contempt of court. A judge sentenced defense attorney Adam Reposa to 90 days in jail on Tuesday for making a lewd gesture and simulating masturbation while standing before a County Court-at-Law judge in March.
At a contempt hearing Monday, Judge Jan Breland said Reposa, 33, rolled his eyes and looked at her while motioning with his right hand. Reposa said the gesture came from near his hip and was aimed at a prosecutor while discussing plea negotiations in a drunken driving case.
Reposa's attorney asked for a sentence of one day in jail.
Visiting State Judge Paul Davis, however, said it was his "honor to uphold the integrity of the judicial process" and sentenced Reposa to 90 days. The attorney was led from the courtroom in handcuffs.
Davis said he teaches a course on courtroom decorum to new judges and said such cases are very rare. He also noted that Reposa had fluctuated between apologizing for offending Breland and justifying his behavior as a zealous attorney defending a client.
In a closing argument, First Assistant County Attorney Randy Leavitt said Reposa's gesture was just the latest in a string of offensive behavior, which included calling prosecutors vulgar names in court.
Another dumb criminal
A criminal in Manteca, Calif. made a mistake when attempting to rob a home on April 1. Erich Hans Urbat attempted to take a camera from outside of a suburban home; however, it happened to be a video surveillance camera.
The video camera recorded Urbat loosening the screws and taking the camera and sent it to a tape inside of the home. The tape was later given to the police who recognized Urbat’s face.
Urbat was arrested later wearing the same grey hooded sweatshirt he wore in the surveillance video.
“Sometimes we just get really lucky, and they aren’t too bright,” Manteca Police Capt. Dave Bricker said.

A new law in Indiana, beginning in July, will require all registered sex offenders to submit to police their e-mail addresses, screen names and log-in names to social networking Web sites. They will also be required to install software on their computer that will allow police to monitor what they are doing on their computer at any given time.
“If we can look into their private Internet and look into what they're doing, and they're contacting somebody they shouldn't be, that's going to help stop them,” Scott County Sheriff John Lizenby told local newspapers.
Despite this law being put into place to protect the victims, one registered sex offender, Steve Morris, says that it violates his right of the Fourth Amendment. As a result, Morris is suing every sheriff and prosecutor in the state of Indiana.
The Fourth Amendment protects citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures of property. According to the Supreme Court, law enforcement cannot conduct a search without probable cause and a search warrant.

A patient discharged from a Colorado hospital stole an ambulance and turned on the siren, leading cops on a 100-mph chase.
Mickey Stevenson Terry, 35, was stopped only when he wrecked the ambulance. He was taken back to the hospital - this time under armed guard.
A retiree in Wales lived in pain for 50 years following a motorcycle crash, only to discover his leg had been broken all along.
Roy Calloway, 70, thought the pain was a side effect of the accident, and used a walking stick to get around.
"The pain had been intolerable for so long it was part of my life," he said. "I've been living in agony for half a century."
World’s most expensive cup of coffee
Caffe Raro is said to be the world’s most expensive coffee. The coffee sells for about 50 pounds per cup (roughly $98). The coffee comes from the rare Kopi Luwak beans.
The Kopi Luwak beans are eaten and then expelled by the Asian palm civet. The Asian palm civet is said to be able to pick the best coffee beans, and their stomach breaks down the fruit leaving just the bean.
Workers collect the beans and wash off the excrement. The coffee beans are then roasted for around 12 minutes to maximize the potential of the coffee. I will stay with Folgers!!
Ketchup plus eggs equals antisocial youths
Norfolk officials have banned the sale of tomato ketchup and eggs to minors because it is believed to cause antisocial behavior. According to authorities, several complaints were coming in about youths squirting ketchup at passing vehicles, or at windows or doors.
As a result, local supermarkets were told to “challenge” youths who were trying to buy ketchup in squirting bottles or eggs. Local police even posted signs supporting this on the supermarket windows.
“I know it sounds a bit daft, but it has made a difference because we have had no more reported incidents since the supermarkets came on board with this,” said Sgt. Andy Brown.
A German man survived a 25-foot plunge down an elevator shaft only to land on top of a 57-year-old woman who had toppled down the shaft the day before.
Despite causing her further injury, he likely saved her life, police said.
"The woman had been lying unconscious in the shaft for some time already," said police spokesman Manfred Vonhausen.
It took 76 years on the road for Jack Higgs to finally crash his car but, boy, was it a doozy!
The 93-year-old took out not one, but two gleaming new Porsches with his Ford Fiesta, causing $120,000 worth of damage outside a showroom in Wales.
"I can't understand it. Nothing like this has happened to me before," Higgs said, estimating that he has driven half a million miles in his lifetime.
Apparently, this is one way of getting someone's attention.
Police in Billings, Mont., were called after a naked man brandishing a handgun ran through a hotel asking for help getting into his room.
First, the man knocked on several doors, then jumped over the check-in counter at the Comfort Inn.
Not surprisingly, police say, the man was intoxicated.

Husband Cages Wife

An Ohio man is accused of handcuffing his wife inside a dog cage after they were married in Las Vegas.
Police say the woman escaped after days of the mistreatment.
Pete Kenworthy has the details.
"He had her handcuffed inside of the cage, would hold her against her will inside the cage for 2 - 4 hours at a time, release her from the cage, re-handcuff her outside the cage, let 2 dogs inside the cage and crate the dogs."

Police say they tracked down the husband hours later in Springfield.
He had taken several pills and is currently in the hospital.
Once released, he'll be charged with abduction, child endangerment, assault and domestic violence.

Sheriff Covers Medic's $60 Towing Bill

A Navy medic is being reimbursed for a $60 towing bill he received while he was helping perform CPR on a heart attack victim.
Jackson County Undersheriff Tom Finco said the department was paying back Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Tim Moore as "a goodwill gesture"
"(Moore) said it wasn't necessary, he understood, but we sent him a check anyway," Finco said.
Moore, 24, who had just returned from Iraq, was driving on Interstate 94 on April 2 when he saw an ambulance parked on the side. He pulled over and comforted a woman whose fiance had suffered a heart attack inside the ambulance.
When the rescuers learned of Moore's medical training, they asked if he would help administer CPR. He left his truck on the exit ramp and got in. The man died at Foote Hospital in Jackson.
In the meantime, Moore's truck — parked partly over the white line marking the side of the road — was deemed a travel hazard and towed.
Moore, now stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., said people have been sending checks to his parents after word spread about the towing bill, but he plans to donate that money to veterans' charities.

Undignified deaths
A 39-year-old man who had been cited 32 times for driving without a seat belt (and who finally rigged a fake belt in his car to create the illusion that he was belted in) was killed in a low-impact car crash that would not have been fatal to a belted driver (Okata, New Zealand; coroner’s inquest, February).
And a 74-year-old man died of hypothermia after sneaking out of a nursing home at 4:30 a.m. to smoke (Winnipeg, Manitoba; January).
And a man and a woman were fatally struck by several vehicles on the Trans-Canada Highway after they had continued a fight from their stopped car out to the middle of the road (Chilliwack, British Columbia; February).
Spokane police department gets weird questions on tip line, including how to thaw a turkey
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane police and sheriff's departments operate a tip line to record information from callers about crimes. It gets about a dozen calls a day, but not all are tips.
The sheriff's department said people call with questions about boating regulations and what businesses are open on holidays.
Other questions on the police tip line asked how to thaw a 12-pound turkey, how long to wait after a death to read a will, and, "Who can I get to come over and pick up my claw-foot bathtub?"
Clerk Throws Cans of Tobacco at Robber

A cigarette store cashier has snuffed out a robbery. Police said a masked man flashed a knife at the Cigarette Outlet on Friday and forced one employee to the floor, then demanded money from another worker, Ruth Wright.
Instead of cash, Wright threw two cans of chewing tobacco at the robber, and one hit him in the face.
Officers said a customer then tackled the man, but the robber broke free and bolted out the door.
A cashier, Kittie Peacock, said the store had been robbed at least once before.

NY Man Tries Bogus Bill for Bail

Police say it was no surprise a bogus $50 bill got a Long Island man arrested: He was trying to use it to pay his bail on a traffic charge. The transaction compounded Cyheam Forney's legal problems and landed him in jail.
Police say they spotted the 31-year-old Forney making an illegal left turn in Melville on Thursday and discovered his license had been suspended.
Forney was arrested on a misdemeanor suspended license charge — until officers said he proffered the counterfeit currency as bail money. He was being held early Friday on a felony charge of possessing a forged instrument.
No telephone number could be found for Forney at the address police had for him, and they didn't know whether he had a lawyer.
Men Accused of Stealing Swimming Pool

Two Massachusetts men are accused of stealing a swimming pool from a Granby backyard. Timothy Morin, 37, and David Hawley, 18, both of Westfield, were charged Friday with trespassing, larceny, conspiracy, and possession of burglary tools.
Granby police say they found parts from the disassembled aboveground pool in the rear seat of the men's car, about a mile away from the yard where the pool had stood.
Police say the men told them they took the pool for scrap metal and felt they were doing the owners a favor by getting rid of it for them.
Police also recovered from the car: seven automotive batteries, a coil of copper pipe, wire with a copper core, an aluminum pneumatic manifold with brass fittings, bolt cutters, metal shears and a hammer.
Suspect Nabbed After Trying to Skip Fare

For a fugitive riding public transportation, it didn't pay to be cheap. A North Carolina bank robbery suspect is in custody after he was caught taking a free ride on Baltimore's light rail.
A ticket on the train costs $1.60. But the Maryland Transit Administration said Isaac Ray Dunn, 58, didn't have one when an MTA police officer asked passengers to show their tickets on Thursday afternoon at the North Linthicum stop south of the city.
After arresting Dunn for failing to buy a ticket, police did a check for outstanding warrants and found out he's wanted for a bank robbery in Charlotte, N.C.
Police turned Dunn over to U.S. Marshals.
Navy Medic Gets Bill After Helping Out

A Navy medic who stopped to calm a woman whose husband was having a heart attack — and helped an ambulance crew perform CPR on the man en route to a hospital — ended up with a $60 towing bill.
Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Tim Moore was driving on Interstate 94 near Jackson on April 2 when he saw an ambulance parked along the eastbound lane, the Jackson Citizen Patriot reported.
He said he pulled over to try to help calm the woman, who was near the ambulance. When the rescuers learned of Moore's medical training, they asked if he would help administer CPR on the way to Foote Hospital.
"I pulled over in a bit of a hurry," said Moore, who since has returned to Camp Lejeune, N.C. "Of course, when they asked me to do CPR, I just locked the truck and didn't really think about moving it."
The man died in the emergency room.
When Moore returned to the side of the interstate two hours later, the truck was missing. It turns out the truck — parked partly over the white line marking the side of the road — was considered a travel hazard and towed.
Jackson County Undersheriff Tom Finco said deputies tried to call Moore before the tow but got no answer at the number they had on record. The charge was levied by the towing company.
"It's very unfortunate he stopped to do a good deed and that's what happened," Finco said, "but we definitely don't want his vehicle left there and hit by another car traveling down the ramp."
Moore said he was a little upset at the time. Now, he says: "It's only $60."
